H-5 — American four-seat multipurpose helicopter, a modernization of the R-4, with improved payload capacity, increased reliability, speed, and ceiling. S-51 — civilian modification of the helicopter. Built by the Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation. The H-5/S-51 first flew on February 16, 1946. This helicopter was the first to be equipped with an autopilot, which significantly simplified control. A total of 379 H-5/S-51 helicopters were built. The aircraft was widely used by the US armed forces and several other countries.
