The beginning of the Evangelical Lutheran parish dates back to the Reformation in Prussia. St. Jacob’s Church, otherwise known as the manor church and officially called Litauische Kirche Memel (the Lithuanian church in Klaipėda), was built between 1525 and 1535 by the Dane River in the old town. In 1686, a large brick church was constructed. Next to the Lithuanian church, a church school was built. From 1677 to 1685, the church’s cantor, Valentin Dach, who was a relative of Simon Dach (1605/1659), a German poet of Lithuanian descent born in Klaipėda, worked there as a teacher. In 1854, the old Lithuanian church burned down in a city fire. In 1856, a new one was built according to the design of German architect A. Stüler, using the walls of the old sanctuary. The church was a three-nave building without an apse or tower, 42 meters long, 23 meters wide, and 10 meters high to the roof. At the end of World War II, the church was slightly damaged, but in the summer of 1946, services were held there again, even though there was a large hole in the middle of the roof made by a shell. Around 1959, a unit of the Soviet army demolished the building using tanks. A restaurant was built on the site of the church. After 1990, there were plans to buy the plot and restore the sanctuary, but these were only discussions. The model is simple, so it is perfect for beginners and modelers with little experience.
